Chrystia Freeland is a prominent Canadian journalist, politician, and current Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. Born in 1968 in Peace River, Alberta, Freeland had a successful career in journalism before entering politics. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Russian history and literature from Harvard University and later received her Master’s degree in Slavonic studies from St. Antony’s College, Oxford. Freeland began her career as a journalist in Ukraine during the fall of the Soviet Union and went on to cover numerous global events before eventually returning to Canada.
In 2013, Freeland made her foray into politics by running for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons representing the Toronto district of Toronto Centre. She won the election and quickly rose through the ranks, serving as Minister of International Trade and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2019, she was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, making her one of the most powerful women in Canadian politics.
As a strong advocate for free trade and a vocal critic of protectionist policies, Freeland has been at the forefront of major policy decisions in Canada, including the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
